What is diphenhydramine?

There are tow groups of medications, OTC or over the counter and POM or prescription only. OTC’s can be found in pharmacies, retail discount stores, and supermarkets. These can be taken without any special restrictions. POM’s have to be prescribed by your doctor. The majority of OTC’s are safe to take for most people and do not contain ingredients that are harmful.

Diphenhydramine is found mostly in antihistamines, and sedatives. The most common form of Diphenhydramine is Benadryl, but can also be found in Unison, Nytol, and Advil PM. These products are OTC however, it can also be prescribed by your doctor. It can also be used to treat extra pyramidal which are side effects caused by typical antipsychotic. Inject able Diphenhydramine is used to treat life threatening reactions such as anaphylaxis shock when caused by peanuts, bee stings, or products containing latex.

Diphenhydramine is one of the first well know antihistamines and was invented in 1943. It quickly became the first prescribed antihistamine to be approved by the FDA or the US Food and Drug Administration.

Benadryl can be found in pharmacies, supermarkets, and many retail discounts stores. There are also generic versions of this brand, which also contain Diphenhydramine.
