Can allergies cause breathing problems?

Having allergies is a condition characterized by a runny nose, postnasal drip, rashes, congestion, and other annoying symptoms. Sometimes allergies can cause breathing problems. This usually occurs in conditions like allergic asthma. Substances like dust, pollen, mold spores, pet dander, pollutants etc trigger allergic asthma. Inhalation of allergens causes an inflammation in the airways of people who are sensitive to these substances. The airway branches out into the lungs through little braches called bronchi. Inflammation of the bronchi makes it difficult for air to pass in and out of the lungs. This causes breathing difficulty, tightness in the chest and wheezing.

Pulmonary function tests, spiromtery and other breathing tests will tell your doctor the extent of your breathing problem. The best way to keep breathing trouble at bay is to avoid the allergen as much as possible. This can be done by keeping the house clean, wearing a dust mask while dusting or working in the yard, avoiding pets, staying indoors when there is pollen in the air and other such measures will go a long way in preventing an allergic reaction from occurring.

Antihistamines and decongestants can relieve blocked airways and make breathing easier. If you have difficulty breathing, consult a doctor at the earliest. Early medical intervention will prevent damage to the lungs and airways.
