Aerius - General Information

Aerius (widely known as desloratadine) is a tricyclic antihistamine which is used to treat allergies. It has a selective and peripheral second generation H1-antagonist action. Histamine is released from histamine-storing cells (mast cells) and than further attaches it’s to other cells that have receptors for histamine. Aerius blocks one type of receptor for histamine (the H1 receptor) and thus prevents activation of cells by histamine. One of the positive aspects of this antihistamine is that, it does not enter the brain from the blood and, therefore, does not cause drowsiness.

Some of the main indications of Aerius are that it relieves symptoms like allergic Rhinitis, Pruritus, and reduction in the number of hives in patients with chronic idiopathic urticaria.
Consult your doctor as soon as possible if you experience dry mouth, nose or throat, fatigue, headache. Immediately stop taking this medication if you find any of these symptoms- Seizures, symptoms of a severe allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling of the mouth or throat.

Before you go for this medication, be sure to inform your doctor about your medical conditions like reduced kidney function, liver not in the proper working condition, pregnancy or if you are breast feeding.
