What is an allergy to sulfites?

A group of compounds that are sulfur-based are known as sulfites and are commonly used in a variety of different food products as a preservative and an enhancer. As estimated by the FDA, there are as many as 1 in 100 individuals that experience sensitivity to sulfites. The reason that an individual acquires this sensitivity is not known and it is an allergy that can develop at any time during a person’s life. It can also range in the severity of the reaction from being one that is mild, to being one that is severe and life threatening. Some of the most common food items that use sulfite in their making would include various soup mixes, baked goods, apple cider, jams, vegetable juices, pickled foods, canned vegetables, potato chips, and a variety of others. If you experience an allergic reaction to items that include sulfites, it is extremely important to always take the time to read the label of ingredients that is included on the packaging. You should also avoid ingredients like sodium sulfite, sodium metabisulfite, sodium bisulfite, potassium metabisulfite, potassium bisulfite, and sulfur dioxide, as each of these contain sulfur
