Allegra, chemical name of this medicine is (±)-4-[1 hydroxy-4-[4-(hydroxydiphenylmethyl)-1-piperidinyl]-butyl]-α, α-dimethyl benzeneacetic acid hydrochloride. Fexofenadine hydrochloride is the active ingredient of this medicine. The film coating of the capsule is formed from hypromellose, blends of iron oxide, povidone, polyethylene glycol, titanium dioxide and silicone dioxide. Its molecular weight comes as: 538.13; it has an empirical formula of: C32H39NO4•HCl. It is available in the market in the form of tablets in 60 and 180 mg strength. The tablets are coated with a peach colored film. It is white in color, oval or bi-convex in shape. It is soluble in ethanol and methanol, a little soluble in water and chloroform, and not soluble in hexane. The medicine Fexofenadine hydrochloride is racemate, which exists as zwitterion in the aqueous media. Patients suffering from sneezing, runny nose and watery eyes may get relief by using this medicine. It should however not be taken by children below 12 years.
This medicine can also be used for the treatment of uncomplicated skin manifestation of chronic idiopathic urticaria in both adults and children. The doses of this medicine should be however, taken under the recommendation from the doctor. It should be disintegrated into the tongue and consequently swallowed with or without water. It should be taken on an empty stomach. Before each usage, the bottle should be shaken well.
